A game of skill that involves betting, raising and bluffing to achieve a winning hand of five cards. It can be played by two to fourteen players, with the object of the game being to win a pot (the sum total of all bets in one deal). There are many different variants of poker. A standard deck of 52 cards is used, with four suits – spades, hearts, clubs and diamonds – plus an ace.<\/p>\n
The game begins with each player placing a forced bet, often called the ante or blind. The dealer then shuffles the cards, and deals each player a set number of cards, starting with the person to their left. The cards may be dealt face up or face down, depending on the type of poker being played. There are typically several betting intervals, or “rounds,” in a poker game. At the end of each interval, the players reveal their hands and the best hand wins the pot.<\/p>\n
The best hand in poker is a royal flush, which consists of the five highest-ranking cards, all of the same suit (for example, eights, kings, queens, and eight of clubs). A straight is five consecutive cards of the same rank, such as three jacks, sevens, and sixes. A three-of-a-kind is three cards of the same rank, such as four of clubs, and a pair is two distinct pairs of cards. The highest card breaks ties.
